IELTS Overall Band Formula and Rounding

The overall band is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band:

Overall Band = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) / 4, rounded to the nearest 0.5

For example: (7.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0) / 4 = 6.75, which rounds up to 7.0. The rounding rules this calculator follows:

  • An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band (6.25 becomes 6.5).
  • An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band (6.75 becomes 7.0).
  • Anything else rounds to the nearest whole or half band (6.125 becomes 6.0; 6.625 becomes 6.5).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?

Your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) are added together and divided by 4. The result is rounded to the nearest half band, which is exactly what this calculator does.

What IELTS band do I need to study abroad?

It depends on the institution and country. Most universities ask for an overall band of 6.0 to 7.5, often with a minimum band in each section. Check the exact requirements of your target university before you plan your preparation. Many students also convert their academic credits for foreign applications; our ECTS Credit Calculator can help with that.

Can I use expected or practice-test scores?

Yes. Enter the scores from your mock tests to estimate your likely overall band, then recalculate as your practice scores improve.

Does this match the official IELTS scoring?

This calculator follows the standard half-band rounding rules used for official IELTS scores. Your official result is issued by the test center, but the math behind this estimate matches their rounding.

What if one of my sections is much lower than the others?

The overall band is a simple average, so one low section pulls it down. Also note that many universities and immigration programs require a minimum band in each section, not just a good overall score.

Is the IELTS Band Calculator free to use?

Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up required. Calculate your band as many times as you need.
