The Reducing-Balance Formula (Every Bank Uses It)

EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1), where P = financed amount (price − down payment), r = monthly rate (annual ÷ 12), n = months.

  • Interest/ijarah rental is charged only on the remaining balance — that’s why early EMIs are mostly markup and later EMIs are mostly principal.
  • Flat-rate quotes (rare now) look cheaper but aren’t comparable — always convert to reducing-balance effective rates.

How to Use

  1. Enter the vehicle price.
  2. Set down payment % (20–30% typical; used cars higher).
  3. Enter the rate your bank quoted (editable).
  4. Set tenure and Calculate — monthly instalment, total instalments, and all-in cost.

Example

Rs 4,000,000 used car, 30% down (Rs 1,200,000), Rs 2,800,000 financed for 4 years at 18%: monthly ≈ Rs 81,900; total ≈ Rs 3.93 million — nearly Rs 1.13 million in markup. Used-car financing costs more because rates and down payments are stiffer.

Smart Borrowing Rules

  • Keep the EMI under ~30% of take-home pay — cars have running costs on top (fuel, insurance, maintenance).
  • Shortest comfortable tenure beats the lowest monthly payment.
  • Get 3 written quotes; the “processing fee,” “tracker,” and insurance lines differ more than the headline rates.
  • Run new-vs-used: a 2-year-old car’s price drop often beats the higher used-car rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Flat rate vs reducing balance — which is better?

Reducing balance is the standard and the honest comparison basis. A “flat 10%” is roughly equivalent to ~18% reducing balance — always compare on reducing terms.

New vs used car finance — what’s different?

Used cars: higher down payment, shorter max tenure, sometimes higher rates, and age limits. The calculator handles both — set your actual quote’s numbers.

Should I finance or save and buy cash?

If the loan rate exceeds what your savings earn, cash wins — but in Pakistan, car prices often rise faster than savings grow. Model both with the calculator.

What about the insurance and tracker?

Mandatory on financed cars; budget them on top of the EMI — our totals include what you enter.
